Adding a third dimension
Building from my sketches, I created refined line drawings and foam board prototypes of each of my three ideas to share and discuss with Poppin.
01
Poppin liked the use of the teardrop shape but
did not think the overall concept deviated enough
from the dividers that they are currently bringing
to the market.
Too similar!
02
Unfortunately, Poppin was already working on
this type of adjustable and movable space
dividers in a 4’ X 5’ form factor.
Poppin beat me to it!
03
Popping really liked the idea of creating a
landscape across the back of a desktop and
were
very interested in the idea of adding a
3rd dimension to the transformable panel.
Let's go with this.
Iteration
Based on Poppin’s feedback, I iterated more design
solutions of the desktop adjustable concept.
I
wanted to create a more ‘coif-like’ enclosure with
an added dimension that would differentiate my
design from
Poppin’s other products while also
providing more seclusion.
Enter the
"Cone of Silence"
The physical model-making process
was essential to getting the angles
and proportions correct and to
understanding how the concept felt
in 3D physical space. I went back and
forth testing and making iterations
with slightly different dimensions.
After further discussion, Poppin and I agreed
that
having the adjustable panels attached to
the back
of their desk system like a landscape was
unnecessary. The design would be more useful
if it could be easily folded and transported.
Moving forward, I needed to create a final working prototype that would allow
the office employee to easily store the product when it was not being used.
