To the computer... and beyond!
Models
After my discussion with Poppin, I wanted to
explore the
desktop hook but with a simple
latching mechanism. I tried several options, but
most of them were too complex and exposed
for Poppin’s design language. I decided to
model a solution, further using Poppin’s own
“clever lever” latching system.
Progress
After meeting with Poppin in person, they no longer
felt like the height of the hook was an issue. However,
they did feel that the hardware of the lever was too
visible for Poppin’s brand aesthetic. They offered some
insight for a concealed spring-loaded mechanism.
Overall, Poppin was not concerned with making it
customizable for all desks but rather a decent
range of desk thicknesses. They really appreciated
my original “tree-like” form.
Spring
I tried to find a simple solution for a spring-loaded
mechanism that would provide constant pressure
on the tabletop for support. I created a model to demonstrate the spring action.
Ultimately, even this solution was too complex.
The form could exist simply and could exclusively
fit Poppin’s Series A desk system.
After working through both the clever lever and spring solutions to no avail,
I circled back to my original, most simple solution. Sometimes less is more.
It was time to take this baby into production!
